Most of the Willies staff are players ourselves, so we’re super passionate about the game. We understand how critical your protective gear is to your safety and comfort, and we do everything possible to give you the most competitive prices from top-quality manufacturers in the business.
While both player and goalie pants protect your thighs, butt, kidneys and lower back from falls, checks and collisions on the ice, goalie pants have more padding and protection in the ‘puck facing’ areas (thighs, groin and waist). Goalie pants are also slightly wider, helping you to cover more of the net.
Like most things when it comes to ice hockey gear, the fit of your shorts (or pants) depends on your preference. To find your measurements for the perfect-fitting pair of shorts, simply measure your waist in inches, just above your hips.
When you’re trying ice hockey shorts on, it’s a good idea also to wear your chest protector and leg pads. You’ll get the most accurate feeling of how your pants fit with the rest of your gear, whether your shorts interfere with your chest protector, or whether you’ve got any gaps in protection. You’ll also be able to check your range of motion, which is crucial to your performance.
If you prefer to wear your chest protector outside your pants, get shorts with a tapered waist to sit comfortably on you with your chest protector sitting on top. If you prefer to wear your chest protector inside your pants, get pants with a wider, ‘barrel’ fit, or get pants one size up from your usual. Either way, you’ll need suspenders to keep your pants where they should be throughout your game.
