An ice hockey referee's equipment differs slightly from a player's and involves several main components.
The most iconic part of a referee’s uniform is the black and white sweater with red or orange armbands.
Ice hockey referees overseeing senior games will wear almost as much protective equipment as you see players wearing, including a jockstrap, padded shorts/girdle, padded undershirt, elbow pads and shinpads.
For officials refereeing U13 games and below, hip and thigh protection isn’t required; however, the higher up the leagues you go, the more likely you’ll want to save your thighs from a 90mph slapshot! Regardless of whether you go for extra protection, all referees wear black pants as part of the uniform.
Just like players, referees also need an ice hockey helmet with a visor, and this will usually be black to complement the rest of the official uniform.
Another small detail that makes up a referee’s uniform is the solid white laces on their skates.
