While most ice hockey equipment is transferable to inline hockey, the girdle is one of the few pieces of kit that is unique to roller hockey. Ice hockey pants work really well to keep players warm on the ice, but they’re way too bulky and insulating for inline hockey — this is where the roller hockey girdle or padded shorts come in.
Mobility and breathability are the most significant design features for inline hockey girdles. Girdles are a more lightweight and mobile version of ice hockey pants/shorts whereas padded shorts are usually a compression style for a maximum range of movement while keeping your thighs, hips and tailbone protected. A girdle will provide more protection, but padded shorts tend to be the preference for inline players as they tend to give enough protection whilst giving maximum mobility, which is crucial for such a fast-paced game.
Padded shorts typically fit like compression shorts, so a tighter fit is normal — a girdle fits more like traditional shorts, so they feel tighter around the waist with a hanging short. Correctly fitting shorts/ girdles should feel snug but not restrict movement, reaching just below the knee and covering the hips, tailbone, kidneys, and thighs.
When you’re trying on girdles for inline hockey, it’s a good idea to wear your padded shirt and shin guards. You’ll get the most accurate feeling of how your girdle fits with the rest of your protective equipment, including whether there’s any interference or any gaps in protection. You’ll also be able to check your range of motion, which is crucial to your performance.
The Mission RH compression girdle is an excellent option for inline hockey players thanks to its lightweight, breathable design and high-density polyethene in the thighs, hips and tailbone to keep you protected in your most important areas.
The Tour Code 1 is an excellent value girdle for beginner players, delivering the protection you need while you learn the basics with synthetic rubber pads around the thighs, hips and tailbone. Carefully-placed air vents also help to keep you cool and comfortable throughout your games.
