Ice Skate Baking

Modern day skates feel pretty great out of the box, but in order to get a near custom fit, we highly recommend baking skates that are suitable for the process. In fact we feel this is so important, that it is FREE OF CHARGE for all boots brought from us. We recommend getting this process done on a day that you are not intending to use your skates, as we advise 24 hours cooldown before use.

If you haven’t bought your boots from us, don’t worry, we will bake the boots for a charge of £15!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION (FAQ)

  • WHAT IS SKATE BAKING AND IS IT NECESARY?

“Baking,” another term for the heat molding process, provides the player with the opportunity to further improve the fit of their skate. The process involves heating the skates at a high temperature, followed by tightly tying the laces with the foot inside the boot. After the player sits with the bottom of the blades against a soft surface for about 15 minutes, the boots will have moulded to the shape of player’s feet. This process helps reduce the break-in period for new skates that have a very stiff boot. It is important to note that baking is NOT a necessary process. In fact, some players prefer the traditional way of breaking in skates which is to simply wear them.

Willies Ice Hockey Emporium suggests ‘baking’ ice hockey skates when purchasing intermediate to advanced level skates.

  • WHY IS SKATE BAKING NOT AVAILABLE ON THE MAIL IN SERVICE?

To bake or heat mould skates we must put the heated skates on the skaters foot to mould the boot. Without the skater present we are essentially just warming up and cooling down a pair of skates.

  • ARE MY SKATES BAKEABLE?

Recreational and beginner skates are not recommended because the bake would make the lifespan of the skate much shorter. Additionally, recreational skates do not carry enough stiffness to need ‘breaking in’, and baking can wear materials down to provide less support.
