Bauer Size Guides For Ice Hockey Players & Goalies

In the market for some new Bauer ice hockey gear, but want to make sure you order the right sizes first? We’ve got you.

Check out all the sizing charts and fitting advice you need to get a perfect fit with your Bauer gear.

Bauer Ice Hockey Skates

Almost three-quarters of NHL players trust Bauer for their ice hockey skates — so you can be sure of unrivalled performance and quality when you choose a Bauer skate

Measuring For Bauer Ice Hockey Skates

The process of measuring for ice hockey skates is an imperfect science, depending on your foot shape and skate fit preference. Your skate size will usually be around one full size smaller than your standard shoe size, although this can vary, so it’s a good idea to try on some ice hockey skates to be sure.

When your skate is laced up, your foot should lie flat on the footbed, with your toes lightly touching the front of the skate. You should feel a snug, responsive fit in your boot that helps you to connect with the ice and make those technical manoeuvres.

If you want to minimise the guesswork and find out exactly which Bauer ice hockey skate is right for your unique foot, visit us in-store at Willies in Coventry. As an approved Bauer 3D Skate Lab retailer, we can take a 3D anatomical scan of your foot and match you with the skate model and size that will give you the best fit.

Bauer Ice Hockey Sticks

From the quality materials to the range of kick points and flexes, it’s no surprise that Bauer sticks top the charts for many ice hockey players.

Measuring For Bauer Ice Hockey Sticks

Ice hockey stick sizes are determined by the shaft length, coming in Youth, Junior, Intermediate and Senior sizes. As a general rule, your Bauer stick should reach the top of your nose when the blade toe is on the floor.

These measurements should be used as a general guide — your preference and playstyle will influence the type of ice hockey stick that is right for you.

If you can’t find a stick that’s the perfect length, you can chop your stick or add an extension. Remember that chopping your stick down will reduce the flex, and adding an extension will increase the flex. Want more pro advice? Check out our guide to choosing the right ice hockey stick

Bauer Stick Size Chart

Use this sizing chart to find the best length and flex for your height and weight. Remember: it’s a good idea to come into our store to try out a range of Bauer ice hockey sticks, as your playstyle and preference may differ.

If you want a Bauer stick with >95 flex, you'll need to opt for a custom stick.

Bauer Shoulder Pads

From agile forwards to defencemen that love a good puck battle, Bauer have created a range of shoulder pads that suit your position and playstyle.

Measuring For Bauer Ice Hockey Shoulder Pads

To figure out what size shoulder pads you need, take a measuring tape and measure the circumference of your chest (taken at the widest part of your chest, just under your arms.

Once you’ve got your chest measurement and weight, use the size chart below to find out what size shoulder pads you need. If you’re in between sizes, you can either size up for a bulkier fit with extra coverage or size down for an agile, low-profile fit.

When you’re trying on shoulder pads, the tips of your shoulders should fit squarely in the shoulder caps without restricting your movement or affecting your elbow pads; but it shouldn’t move around too much to ensure that you stay protected while you’re out on the ice.

With a massive range of Bauer shoulder pads in stock, pop into our store in Coventry to try on different sizes and models to find the perfect Bauer shoulder pads for your playstyle.

Bauer Elbow Pads

Elbow pads are a crucial piece of kit for any ice hockey player — with Bauer elbow pads offering unmatched protection and performance. Ensure you get the perfect fit to keep you protected throughout your game.

Measuring For Bauer Ice Hockey Elbow Pads

To get your elbow pad measurement, extend your arm straight out in front of you and measure from the middle of your bicep to the centre of your forearm (about where the cuff of your glove sits).

Use your elbow pad measurement and weight to find your ideal size in the chart below. If you’re between two sizes, you can choose to size up to prioritise coverage and protection or size down for a more anatomical, agile fit.

Your playstyle and personal preferences may also influence the size of elbow pads that you need, so it’s a good idea to come into our store in Coventry and try on a few different sizes and models.

When trying them on, your elbows should fit comfortably into the elbow cups, and the straps should be snug but not too tight to allow a free range of motion. If you’ve got significant gaps between your elbow pads and shoulder pads/gloves, you may need to size up to keep you protected on the ice.

Bauer Ice Hockey Gloves

With ice hockey being one of the most physical contact sports out there, kitting yourself out with properly-fitting gloves is a must. Bauer manufactures a range of ice hockey gloves to suit any player, from agile forwards to defensive defensemen.

Measuring For Bauer Gloves

You can use your height, weight and age to get a ballpark idea of the size of glove you need, or to get an accurate size, place your measuring tape at the tip of your middle finger and measure to the base of your palm. Double this measurement to find the size of gloves you need; as an example, if your hand measures six inches, you’ll likely fit into 12-inch ice hockey gloves.

As with all ice hockey gear, these measurements and size charts are here to guide you in finding the correct sizes. To take the guesswork out of it, visit us in-store to try on your Bauer ice hockey gloves and all the other equipment you need to play safely and comfortably.

Ice hockey gloves come in three different fit profiles — 4-roll, anatomical, and tapered.

  • If you prefer a roomier fit with low resistance, a traditional 4-roll glove like the custom Bauer Pro is a great option; get in touch with us to order yours.
  • Players that like a snug fit around the hands and fingers with a smaller range of movement should go for an anatomical glove like the Bauer Supreme or the Bauer X.
  • For a glove that has an anatomical fit around the hand and fingers with more room towards the cuff, go for a tapered profile found in the Bauer Vapor gloves.

When trying on ice hockey gloves, you want to ensure that the cuff of your glove covers your forearm up to your elbow pad and that your fingers don’t extend past the protective surface on top of your glove — or you’ll soon figure out how much a stray puck can hurt!

Bauer Ice Hockey Helmets

Bauer’s range of ice hockey helmets will help keep your most important asset protected, no matter your age, skill level or playstyle.

Measuring For Bauer Ice Hockey Helmets

When you measure for a Bauer ice hockey helmet, all you need is your head circumference. Take your measuring tape and wrap it once around your head at the widest point (usually 1-2 fingers above your eyebrows).

Different brands and models will fit different head shapes more comfortably — no matter your budget, preference or playstyle, the most important deciding factor for your helmet is how well it fits your head. To make sure you get the best fit, we highly recommend visiting us in-store so we can help you find the perfect helmet to keep you comfortable and safe on the ice.

When trying on ice hockey helmets, open the adjustable setting to the largest size and position the helmet so that the front sits one finger-width above your eyebrows. Then, tighten the adjuster until the helmet fits snugly but is not uncomfortable.

Bauer Goalie Skates

The quality, technology and reputation of the Bauer goalie skates make them an easy choice for goalies up and down the leagues — find out how to choose your size with our sizing and fit advice.

Measuring For Ice Hockey Goalie Skates From Bauer

Similarly to sizing for a player skate, the best goalie skates for you are the ones that fit your foot comfortably and keep you stable to help you quickly move around the crease and make the saves.

A general guideline for measuring goalie skates is to try one full size down from your regular shoe size. Your skates should feel snug but not uncomfortably tight, and your toes shouldn’t reach the toe cap.

Bauer has elevated the game when it comes to getting a better fit from off-the-shelf goalie skates. With their 3D performance fit, you can choose the right skate that fits your foot width and volume by tailoring the heel, forefoot and ankle depth wraps. Go for Fit 1 for a narrow width with low volume, Fit 2 for medium width and volume, or Fit 3 for wide width and high volume.

Bauer Goalie Sticks

If you’re looking for a lightweight, comfortable goalie stick that can handle the heavy action, look no further than Bauer’s range of goalie sticks.

Measuring For Ice Hockey Goalie Sticks From Bauer

Choosing the right goalie stick comes down to your personal playstyle in the crease. No matter the brand of the stick, it’s easy to gauge your ideal goalie stick size.

  1. Put your goalie skates on.
  2. Get into your stance with your knees bent, hands in front, and your stick out in front of you.
  3. Take note of your blocker. If it overlaps with the outside edge of your leg pad, your paddle is too short and will reduce your protection area. If there’s a gap between your leg pad and blocker, your paddle is too long, and it will leave a hole in your defences. If your blocker is parallel to your leg pad and you don’t have any gaps in defences, your paddle length is just right.
  4. Take a look at the toe of your stick, too; if your goalie stick is the right size, the toe shouldn’t lift off the ice when you’re in your goalie stance.

Bauer Goalie Masks

With goalie masks for any style of goaltender, Bauer can keep you safe and comfortable in the crease.

Measuring For Goalie Masks From Bauer

Just like measuring for a player helmet, all you need to get your goalie mask size is to measure the circumference of your head. Simply grab your measuring tape, wrap it once around your head at the widest point, and make a note of the measurement.

When it comes to your goalie mask, the most important thing is how well it fits your head shape.

When trying on goalie masks, open up the adjustable setting to the largest size and position it so that the front is about half an inch above your eyebrows. Then, tighten the adjuster until the mask fits snugly but isn’t uncomfortable. It’s a good idea to bring your chest protector and throat guard with you when you’re trying on goalie masks to ensure that your new mask doesn’t interfere with any of your other gear.

Bauer Goalie Chest Protectors

Regardless of if you’re a blocking-style goalie or more of an agile goaltender, Bauer has a chesty that’s perfect for your playstyle.

Measuring For Bauer Goalie Chest Protectors

Like all of your protective gear in the crease, your chest protector must fit you well; too small and you might have gaps in your protection, and too large will get in the way of your movement and ability to defend.

Most chest protectors, including Bauers, are sized on either the goalie’s height or arm span (fingertip to fingertip with your arms stretched out to the side of you).

If you’re in between sizes, you can go for the size down for a more anatomical profile or size up for a bulkier feel to help you block the puck.

With your chesty covering so many vital areas, it's a good idea to try a few on to ensure you’ve got the perfect size for you and your playstyle. Bring along your goalie mask, neck guard and shorts/pants, so you can see whether your new chest protector will interfere with any of your new gear or leave you with an open gap in protection.

When trying on a chest protector, there are a few pointers to look out for to ensure the best fit.

  • The pad by the neck should sit a few inches below the neck (this is not a neck guard — we highly recommend wearing a goalie throat guard under your chest protector to cover your neck and clavicle).
  • Your shoulders should fit comfortably in the shoulder caps, with the chesty sitting squarely on your shoulders.
  • The chest and belly pad should extend down to your beltline. You can wear your chest protector inside or outside your pants; just make sure you bring them along to see how the gear interacts when you get in and out of your stance.
  • Your elbows should sit squarely in the elbow pads, with the arm pads finishing about one inch above your wrist (about where you’d wear a wristwatch).

Bauer Goalie Catchers & Blockers

Your blocker and catch glove are some of the most important bits of kit that you’ll wear as a goalie — Bauer has a range of top-quality catchers and blockers to help you make the save every time!

Measuring For Bauer Goalie Catch Gloves & Blockers

The size of catchers and blockers is determined by your palm size — take a tape measure and measure from the tip of your index finger down to the heel of your palm.

With your blocker affecting everything from how you hold your stick to your balance and movement in stance, it's crucial to get a properly fitting glove — and your catcher is no different.

If you’re totally new to goaltending in ice hockey, you’ll need to figure out which hand you hold your stick in as this will affect the catchers and blockers you need. You'll need a regular catch glove and blocker if you’re like most goalies and hold your stick in your right hand. If your stick is in your left hand, you’ll need a full right blocker and catcher.

When you’re trying on catch gloves and blockers, they should fit snugly to your hands but not uncomfortably tight, and your fingers shouldn’t reach the top of the finger stalls.

Bauer Goalie Leg Pads

Having one of the biggest impacts with how you move around the crease and drop into the butterfly position, it’s crucial that your leg pads fit perfectly. Bauer’s range of goalie leg pads are designed for every playstyle, so no matter if you prefer the bulky protection of the Supreme Mach or the agile feel of the Vapor Hyperlite, you’re covered.

Measuring For Goalie Leg Pads From Bauer

To get your precise leg pad measurement, slightly bend your knees, and measure from your ankle to the centre of your kneecap. Then, measure from your kneecap to about mid-thigh — this is your leg measurement.

Bauer is the only manufacturer that size their goalie leg pads by ‘small/medium/large’ etc. Other manufacturers use a number sizing system, so we’ve included them in our size guide to give you a good idea if you know your general leg pad size. To see if your sizing is along the right lines, take your leg measurement in inches and add your skate size:

  • Leg measurement: 18”
  • Skate size: 10”
  • Leg pad size: 28” + 1 extra inch for additional padding.

Like most of your gear in ice hockey, getting the right fit for your playstyle and preference is crucial.

When you’re trying on your leg pads, your knees should sit perfectly in the knee cradle, and your pads shouldn’t hinder you from getting in and out of the butterfly.
