  • SHOULD I BUY FIGURE SKATES OR HOCKEY SKATES?

    If you’re a beginner with aspirations of becoming a competitive figure skater, then you should start learning in figure skates from the start — they can help you get used to the feel of the boot and help with balance, posture, stroking and stopping.

     

    Recreational skaters that just want to skate and have some fun can wear either figure skates or hockey skates — we recommend either the Graf Bolero or Bauer X-LS skates, depending on your preference.

  • WHAT ICE SKATE IS BEST FOR MY ABILITY?

    Beginner figure skaters or recreational ice skaters should go for a beginner-level ice skate; these tend to be softer and require less breaking in, so you’ll be more comfortable while learning the basics of figure skating. The Jackson JS180 SoftSkate is an excellent (and comfortable!) starter ice skate, with an Ultima Mark I blade that is perfect for beginners that are just learning to skate.

     

    Once you start practising more advanced jumps and spins, we recommend you upgrade your ice skates to something stiffer to support your ankles through those more technical elements. The Jackson Freestyle or Edea Overture skates are great options if you’re looking to upgrade your skates, or you can look at creating your own boot & blade combination to suit your personal preference and ability.

  • WHAT SIZE ICE SKATE SHOULD I GET?

    Skate fitting for figure or recreational skaters is an imperfect science, as each skater’s foot and preference is unique. Different skate manufacturers will have a slightly different fit profile, so it’s worth popping into our store at Willies in Coventry to try on a range of different skates. A general guideline to follow is that adult skaters should wear one size down from their regular shoe size to get a comfortable fit in their skates. Once laced up, your toes should almost reach the end of the boot, your heel should feel locked in place, and your ankles should feel supported without too much pressure.

     

    For junior skaters, we typically recommend skates the same as their shoe size to leave a little growing room, but it’s better to have a pair of comfortable ice skates for a shorter amount of time rather than stumbling around in ill-fitting skates.
