A standard ice hockey goal has a net opening of 72” (180cm) in width and 48” (120cm) in height. Youth or junior ice hockey leagues will use slightly smaller goals, measuring 60” (152cm) in width and 44” (112cm) in height.
Ice hockey goal sizes are regulated to ensure that the goalie can cover most of the net to block the opposition from scoring.
There are five open areas that a player can shoot for in ice hockey: high glove side, low glove side, high stick side, low stick side, and between the goalie’s legs. The last one is referred to as a five-hole!
These open areas relate to training aids you can get for your net, including the Winnwell Accushot and the Warrior Shooter Tutor.
Like any skill you want to improve, practice is essential — spend at least 20 minutes a day taking as many shots as possible. Work on your wrist shots for dialling in that extra accuracy and loading the stick for more powerful shooting.
Pulling the puck back, transferring your weight and making sure the shaft is in front of the blade when you go to shoot are all fundamental skills that will help you become a legendary shooter!
Travelling to the rink every day to practice might not be possible for you, so get yourself a hockey net and other training aids like shooting targets or a Shooter Tutor to build pinpoint accuracy with your shots by practising at home. Pick up a simulated ice board if you haven’t got a flat surface like a driveway or concrete garage to set up in.
