Choosing the right stick for you is an individual choice based on your own experience level, dominant hand and playstyle. There are also different features of a hockey stick to look at too, because flex, material, curve, and length will all impact performance. It’s crucial to shop around and find the right stick for you, to take your game performance to the next level.
While wood sticks are the cheapest option, we still recommend that if you’re playing organised hockey at any level, you’re best to go for a composite stick. Stick technology has come a long way in the past 15 years, so you can benefit from better puck control, faster releases, and quicker shot speed with a composite stick.
If you go for a one-piece composite stick, it will be lighter with a consistent kick point thanks to the blade and shaft being one complete unit.
Flex is another factor in finding your next stick, ranging from 10 to 102 — what works best for you depends on your age, weight, position and how you like to play. Higher flex sticks have a stiffer shaft, suiting defensemen and bigger players that need a stick that handles their weight on the ice. Lower flex sticks have more whip to them, suiting lighter players and forwards that tend to prefer a flexible shaft for faster release.
Forwards that shoot from up close and defensemen that like to get their shots off quickly need a stick with a low kick point for maximum power and quick release of the puck from the stick. Sticks like the Bauer Vapor, CCM Ribcor, Warrior Covert and Sher-Wood Rekker are the perfect low kick companions to this style of play.
If you’re a physically larger player who puts more weight behind your shots, or a defenseman who likes to take slap shots, sticks with a mid-kick are the answer. The Bauer Nexus, CCM Tacks and Warrior Alpha have got you covered.
If you’re unsure or looking for a more all-around option, the CCM Jetspeed range has a hybrid kick point to give you a jack-of-all-trades performance out on the ice.

There’s a massive range of entry-level hockey sticks available to help you get to grips with the game. As a general rule, we recommend beginners to go for a stick with medium flex, so you have some initial feeling with the puck while practising the fundamentals. The Sher-Wood Rekker Element 4 is a great budget-friendly option for players just getting started.
If you’re looking to practice the basics off the ice, or you’re working with a tighter budget, a wooden stick is a perfect option to get you into the sport.
Hockey sticks come in different price points, with sticks getting more advanced with more features the further up the price range you go.
Entry-level composite player sticks usually start from £64. Mid-level hockey player sticks are anywhere from £120 to £130, with elite sticks costing up to £260.
