Just like your boot's stiffness, your blades make a massive difference to your performance on the ice. Your blades should be appropriate to your current skill level — the more technical your elements, the more advanced your blade needs to be.

When you’re just starting out in figure skating, buying your boots and blades as a set is totally fine to help you learn the basics of ice skating. Once you advance and learn more skills out on the ice, you’ll probably prefer to invest in boots and blades separately to have more control over the feel and performance of your ice skates.

There are many different blades that skaters can choose from to personalise the feel of their ice skates. The most common blade available is the parallel blade (also known as a standard blade), which has the same width along the entire edge. 

Parabolic blades are designed to centre your weight in the middle of the blade, giving skaters more precise control over technical footwork and edge jumps. 

Tapered blades are thicker at the toepick end and taper down into narrower edges at the heel, helping skaters gather more speed on the ice by reducing drag.

Dance blades tend to have a shorter heel, so ice dancers and synchronised skaters can get closer to their partners or other skaters without fear of tripping. They also tend to be narrower, allowing a faster edge shift for the complex footwork required.

Choosing suitable blades for you ultimately comes down to your skating ability. It’s essential to choose a blade that’s suited to your skill level, as an advanced blade will have a more aggressive toe pick and edge that can hinder you while you’re learning.

If you’re a beginner learning the basics of single jumps up to Axels, go for a John Wilson Coronation Ace, a Jackson Ultima Matrix Legacy or an MK Professional blade.

Once you’re ready to move on to practising double jumps, the Jackson Ultima Legacy 8 or Jackson Ultima Legacy 7 are great blades for this skating level.

As you progress onto more advanced triple and quad jumps, the John Wilson Pattern 99, John Wilson Gold Seal, Jackson Ultima Matrix Elite, Jackson Apex Elite or Jackson Apex Supreme are excellent advanced blades.

If you’re an ice dancer or synchronised skater, the MK Dance, Jackson Apex Dance or Jackson Ultima Finesse blades are great options.

Depending on how often you skate and the steel quality, your figure skating blades should need replacing every few years (or as you advance in skating skill level).
