At First Shift Hockey Academy, our mission is to grow the game of ice hockey by removing barriers to participation and creating accessible pathways into the sport.

We are committed to tackling challenges such as equipment costs, limited ice time, and entry-level access. By collaborating with forward-thinking partners, we deliver inclusive programmes, initiatives, and development schemes that open doors for new players.

Through education, opportunity, and community-driven support, we aim to inspire the next generation and make ice hockey a bigger, better, and more inclusive sport across the UK.

1. Equipment Access: Loan & Rental

We eliminate one of the biggest barriers to entry by providing high-quality gear through our loan and rental schemes. This ensures that cost never stands in the way of a child picking up a stick and stepping onto the ice for the first time.

2. Beginner-Friendly Programmes & Courses

Our tailored programmes are designed specifically for newcomers. With a focus on fun, safety, and skill-building, we create a welcoming environment where beginners can learn the game at their own pace and build confidence from day one.

3. Experience Days & Community Events

We bring hockey to life through engaging experience days and inclusive events. These moments spark curiosity, build excitement, and connect families to the sport in a way that’s memorable and meaningful.

4. Education & Support for New Starters

We guide players and families through every step of their hockey journey. From understanding the basics to navigating the sport’s culture, our educational resources and hands-on support make starting out simple and stress-free.

Past Programmes

Girls Learn To Play Programme - Nottingham Vipers

In partnership with Bauer, the Nottingham Vipers, and the National Ice Centre, Willies successfully delivered a 12-week programme introducing around 25 girls to ice hockey for the very first time. To help make the sport more accessible, loan equipment was provided to all participants, significantly reducing the financial barriers typically associated with trying ice hockey. The programme also benefited from subsidised ice time and the generous support of volunteer coaches from the Nottingham hockey community. Thanks to the success of this initiative, the Nottingham Vipers were able to re-establish their under-16s team, which had sadly folded during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Girls Learn To Play Programme - Coventry Phoenix

In partnership with Bauer and Planet Ice Coventry, Coventry Phoenix Women’s Ice Hockey Team successfully delivered a 12-week introductory programme that welcomed around 25 girls to the sport of ice hockey for the very first time. To help make the sport more accessible, loan equipment was provided to all participants, significantly reducing the financial barriers often associated with trying ice hockey.

Thanks to the success of this initiative, many of the participants have since progressed into other development pathways including joining Planet Ice’s Learn to Play courses or becoming part of the Coventry Phoenix Rising development team, which continues to support young female players in building their skills and confidence on the ice.
